One of our Tailgate Campers in production.

Thank you for taking the time to read a little about ourselves, and our Tailgate Campers.

Our love

We love nothing better than exploring our beautiful parks and outback areas of Australia, and have been doing so together for more than 30 years. Our first great adventure together was the Telegraph track to Cape York in our Subaru wagon with our 6 month old first born. We have had many great adventures since with a particular interest in the Victorian High Country and the Beadell Roads of outback Australia, and have changed vehicles and moved from tents to trailers to campers as the family grew, but one thing remained constant – we have continued to enjoy camping and 4WDing, and learning about the history, culture and flora and fauna of the places we explore.

Where are we?

Living in Goorambat, Victoria, we feel so lucky to have the Victorian High Country as our backyard, and have explored this on countless occasions on our own, with our friends, with the Wangaratta 4WD club members, and as trip leaders for ‘Beyond Hotham’. We never tire of its beauty and always find new areas to explore and 4WD challenges to be tackled.

Tailgate campers beginnings

Noel is (was) a farmer, but his real love has always been his workshop where amongst other things he has built portable yards, trailers, campers and laser graders. Designing and building the ultimate camper for our ‘Empty Nester’ travels was as natural as driving the ute that it would sit on.

Noel planned for this slide-on to be lightweight, fuel efficient and use every inch of space efficiently. Irene wanted the camper to be comfortable but due to her back issues it needed to have minimal stairs, everything accessible and setting up and packing away needed to be a breeze. His tailgate design provided the ideal solution for these requirements.

So, in 2008 Tailgate Campers was created, and by popular demand has become available to all those who enjoy the Australian outback camping, fishing or 4wding as much as we do. (well, perhaps not the fishing for Noel!)

Choosing your camper

We encourage you to do your research. Think about your camping style, where you want to go and what features are important to you. Explore these pages and find out what Tailgate Campers has to offer and see if this is the best fit for you. If we haven’t got what you want, don’t be shy – ask us, as we love to custom build where we can, and many of our best ideas have come from working together with our customers to achieve what we first set out to achieve – the ultimate slide-on camper.

Quality product

If you choose Tailgate Campers you can be assured of a quality Australian made product which has a full 2 year warranty. Our campers are fully built on the premises from the ground up as we fabricate and build each component with skill and attention to detail.

We build our campers to last and test them in the most extreme 4WD conditions. The fully welded tubular frame ensures maximum strength and stainless steel fittings and fasteners are chosen for their strength and non-corrosive properties. Quality components are used throughout.

We use Australian made Dynaproof canvas which is made for our harsh conditions and proven to last. We even cater for the most important part of camping – sleeping – with the best range of mattresses available and you guessed it – they’re Aussie made!

Our campers are fully powdercoated. This durable and attractive finish prevents the ‘aging’ look that is typical of raw aluminium and it also keeps the camper cooler.

Quality old fashioned service

We  have a strong commitment and take great pride in providing the best possible experience for our customers from the moment you contact us and well beyond the day that you drive home with your new camper.

We look forward to meeting new members of our Tailgate camping community, and hearing about the adventures you have in your new Slide-on.

Happy Camping,
Noel and Irene
